What to eat when your appetite drops on GLP-1

Low appetite on Ozempic, Mounjaro or another GLP-1: eat on a schedule, start with protein, keep easy snacks, ease nausea days and sip water through the day.

Why your appetite changes

GLP-1 medications, like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro), act on appetite in the brain, and they also make the stomach empty more slowly, so food stays there longer. That’s what makes you feel full sooner, and it’s also behind that heavy, full-stomach feeling.

With smaller meals, protein is often the first thing left behind. And since food is part of your daily water, eating less often means drinking less, too.

Eat by the clock, not by hunger

When hunger doesn’t give you the signal, your routine can give it instead.

  • Keep set times for meals and snacks, even when you don’t feel like eating.
  • Choose small portions. Eat slowly and stop at the first sign of fullness.
  • Start with the protein. If your appetite runs out halfway through the plate, the protein won’t be what’s left behind.
  • Keep easy snacks on hand: yogurt, eggs, cheese, milk.
  • When food won’t go down, a protein drink can help round out the day.

On nausea days

Nausea is the most common side effect of treatment, and it tends to show up more at the start and after each dose increase. Many people feel it more in the days right after their dose. On those days, what usually sits better:

  • Simple, dry foods, like toast, saltine crackers and rice.
  • Cold or room-temperature food, which has less smell.
  • Less fried, fatty, very sweet, spicy or high-fiber food, and keeping away from strong smells.
  • Not lying down right after eating. Fresh air helps.
  • If nausea comes in the days after your dose, keeping your meals lighter on those days.

Water counts too

Drink in sips, throughout the day and between meals, and only a little with food, which already takes up room in your stomach. With nausea, bloating or heartburn, choose still water over sparkling. Alcohol and sugary drinks don’t help: alcohol dehydrates you and can make nausea and reflux worse.

If you have heart failure or kidney disease, or your care team has given you a fluid or salt limit, follow that limit rather than a general water goal.

When it’s too little

Eating less is part of treatment. Eating so little that you feel weak, tired or dizzy is not. On a day like that, a meal or snack with protein helps, even if you’re not hungry, along with water through the day. If it keeps happening, bring it to your care team: how you eat can be adjusted with guidance.

When to get help

Get medical care if you can’t keep even water down, if the vomiting won’t stop, if you have severe abdominal pain, or if you have signs of severe dehydration, such as little or no urine, severe dizziness or confusion. Fainting, a racing heart and shortness of breath also need help right away.
